Windows are a great thing. Without them, our homes would be dark and stale. When they work well, they let in lots of light and fresh air (when you want it).
But windows don’t do their job well indefinitely. At some point, they need to be replaced. But window replacement isn’t cheap and you only want to do it if it is really necessary.
How do you know when to replace windows? Check out these 5 signs that it’s time to replace your windows to help you figure it out.
You Have Single Pane Windows
It’s been a long time since single pane windows were being widely used. Chances are that if your home has single pane windows, they’re already 30 or 40 years old–or maybe even older.
But, regardless of how old they are, it is a good idea to replace those windows. Why? Because single pane windows are extremely inefficient.
Heat is lost easily through the glass and they tend to be drafty. If they’re old enough, they could even be unsafe.
With an upgrade to double or even triple pane glass, you’ll feel a huge difference in the comfort of your home. You’ll also enjoy watching your energy bill fall.
Drafts
Do you feel like your house is drafty? Or maybe some spots in your house just never quite heat up well?
Try feeling around your windows for a draft. A good window will have a good seal and won’t let in those pesky cold drafts. If you can feel cold air coming through, it’s time for some new windows.
Your Energy Bill is Climbing
Does it seem like your energy bill keeps climbing higher and higher? It might have to do with your rate increase. But, then again, it might not.
Sit down and see if your bill is outpacing any rate increases. Old windows could be losing their efficiency and you’re paying the price every month.
Visible Damage
You should routinely inspect your windows. Do you notice damage like chips or cracks in the glass, or peeling or staining on the window sill? This is an obvious sign that it’s time to replace your windows.
Hard to Open/Close and Clean
Old windows can sometimes swell or otherwise lose their proper shape (usually due to moisture exposure). This can make them difficult to open and close.
This, in turn, can make them difficult to clean. Plus, sometimes the glass can get streaky or foggy. Try as you might, you can’t get the glass squeaky clean again.
If you want a clear view of the outdoors, it’s time for new windows.
